Pinchbeck Roses has been growing beautiful roses since 1929, when William Pinchbeck, Jr. (Great-Grandfather of the present operator) arrived in Guilford CT in search of a level piece of land on which to build a rose farm.He found an ideal site; the coastal breezes created a good climate for greenhouse growing, and the New York and Boston markets were easily accessible by rail.
William Jr. built a huge single span iron-framed greenhouse 1,200 feet long and 81 feet wide - still the largest of its kind in the world - and filled it with roses. In 1936, the second greenhouse was built, (600 feet long by 81 feet wide). Enclosed in the two greenhouses are 90,000 rose bushes that produce 3 million blooms per year. Pinchbeck Roses has produced over 200 million blooms in more than seventy years of business. Our Commitment to the environment: We grow beautiful roses, and we do it in an environmentally responsible way. Growing roses year around in the Northeast requires creative solutions to heating our greenhouses. Since 1978 we have proudly used recycled wood as our source of fuel. In addition, we use the steam generated from our boilers to produce electricity in a highly efficient manner, which lowers our consumption of public utilities. |
